Portfolio evaluation guidelines

The portfolio will determine 50% of your semester grade. Portfolios should contain all workshop assignments and written work completed in class (a checklist will be provided). Workshop assignments will determine the overwhelming portion of the portfolio grade, with essays weighted heavier than the other assignments. Each of the non-essay assignments carries a weight of one grade. The first essay carries a weight of two grades; essays 2-5 carry a weight of three grades (or three times the weight of a non-essay workshop assignment); and, essay 6 carries a weight of four grades (or four times the weight of a non-essay workshop assignment). This means the thirteen workshop assignments will generate 25 grades. The average score of those 25 grades will provide the base score for the portfolio.

The remaining written work will be evaluated for its thoroughness and attention to detail. Assignments completed thoroughly and reflecting close attention to detail can raise the portfolio grade, while assignments completed haphazardly can reduce the portfolio grade. Assignments completed adequately will have no effect on the portolio grade. Each missing assignment will reduce the portfolio score by a half letter grade. For example, a portfolio with a base grade of B+ that is missing one in-class writing assignment will receive a grade of B.
