Inner-shell ionization and x-rays
In an inner-shell ionization process the incoming electron (the blue ball) collides with the atom (the yellow blob) and ejects one of the atom's inner-shell (K shell) electrons. The excited atom then can emit a characteristic (K) x-ray (the red ball).
The cross section for ionization of the inner shell of an atom by an electron can be measured by observing the number of characteristic x-rays produced.
We can choose to look at just x-rays, and measure what we call the total cross section. Or, we can look at both an x-ray and an electron simultaneously in a "coincidence experiment."
