The practical side of translation, actually producing translations, has been a source of entertainment, knowledge, and money for me over twenty years now. My research has, however, also made me aware of the importance of translation as a cultural phenomenon. Scholars are beginning to ask why and how a given text is translated into another linguistic culture. The answers often shed more light on the target language culture than on that of the source text. Issues of intertextuality and cultural appropriation have long been central to discussions of translation. As we explore border cultures and cross-cultural exchange, translation studies will provide an important perspective.
