Berry, Adrian
- The Next 500 Years
- As part of a number of futuristic books I'm reading in order
for find books for a freshman seminar I'll be teaching in the
Fall of 1996, I read this book, written in 1994. It starts off
fairly readable, and it makes some interesting predictions, trying
to justify them by putting it all in the scope of recent history.
Too often, though, Berry inserts a big, sour dose of politics that
just sticks out like a sore thumb amidst a work of solid, if
somewhat boring, "speculative reality" (as opposed to "speculative
fiction"). I haven't read many books on coming trends in the
future yet, but surely there are better ones than this.
