Simak, Clifford
- Way Station (6)
- A classic story that won the Hugo in 1963, this is about a
man who maintains a link to the Galactic "subway system" on Earth
in his little house in the country. Things start to fall apart
when he's discovered by his neighbors after several decades though.
Some interesting ideas in this one. Worth reading if only for
the historical perspective on the way sci-fi was written back then.
- City (5)
- A group of seven short stories linked together by a common
thread that they are glimpses of a very long history of the
future evolution of man (as told by dogs, who are genetically
developed to inherit the earth after man's "departure").
Written during the 30's and 40's,
these books are also interesting for their historical perspective.
The stories themselves vary in quality, but they make a decent
and readable cohesive whole. I enjoyed Way Station more than
this collection, but part of that revolves around my dislike
of the short story genre.
