Feinstein, John
- Play Ball
- This is a journalistic/historical account of the 1992 season,
viewed through the eyes of a reporter who seems to be running through
a similar process for all the sports (football and basketball have
also been done, I believe). As a book of baseball stories, it is
all right. Feinstein does a good job of concisely relating some
of the more interesting stories in baseball. He does a better job
of reporting some of the politics of baseball (interactions between
the owners and former commissioner Fay Vincent), all but predicting
the strike of 1994...not just the strike but the OUTCOME. The book
is a little too focussed on the East Coast and the Midwest for my
tastes, but I guess there are more teams over there. Anyway, it's
a great buy at a bargain bookstore in hardback.
