Stauber, John
- Toxic Sludge is Good for You (with Sheldon Rampton)
- This is a tough book to find (I found it cheap at a used book
store), a fact that the authors claim is part of the problem. The
book is an attack on the PR industry. The authors give several
examples of PR in action, along with the fundamentals behind
all Public Relations work (which include aggressive attempts
to squelch things critical of the PR industry). Several interesting
and timely passages here make this a great read. It's funny that
at many universities, PR classes are taught in the same business
curricula as ethics classes, since a lot of PR is finding ways
around ethical dilemmas (usually by misleading the public for
the good of the company but typically not the good of the public).
This book could probably be a best-seller today if it were to add
a chapter about spin control and the past few presidential
administrations.
