Pascarelli, Peter
- The Toughest Job in Baseball
- This book concentrates on the manager's role in baseball,
specifically by following the trials and tribulations of one
of the most widely-respected managers in the game, Jim Leyland.
There are a great many insights I've seen here not present in
other baseball books, like a great description of the relationship
between the team and the beat writers, the feelings of a manager
who protects a player only to be badmouthed by that same player
after a trade, the decisions on playing time, promotions, demotions.
It's all there and well written, to boot. This is the kind of
book that is not only a good read, but it actually makes baseball
more enjoyable to watch.
