Preston, Richard
- The Hot Zone
- Well, if you're looking for something new and different,
you've got it in this book. It is a chronicle of the outbreaks
of a few different strains of Ebola in Africa as well as a
very detailed story about a strain that made it to America
in a shipment of monkeys and eventually infected four humans.
The initial chapters describe the symptoms that eventually
result in death for the deadly strains, and to be honest, it
was disgusting. I'll never forget the mental image of "black
vomit", and that's just for starters. Don't bother reading this
unless you have a strong stomach. If you make it through the
first few chapters, the rest is more of a documentary on how
the Army and the CDC work to handle contagious diseases like
this (the answer: as best they can, which is pretty haphazardly).
