Morrison, Toni
- Race-ing Justice, En-gendering Power
- This book is actually a collection of essay about the
interaction of race, gender and society with a specific
focus on the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. The
highlights are the essays by Morrison, Michael Thelwell
and Kimberle Crenshew. Unfortunately, many of the other
essays are somewhat redundant. Once a given point has been
made, it is kind of boring to read yet another essay explaining
the same thing with a slightly different tack. The book could
also be fairly criticized for not presenting the "pro-Thomas"
side of the argument very objectively. Don't get me wrong...
Anita Hill told the truth without a shadow of a doubt, but it
would have been interesting to hear exactly what the arguments
in favor of Thomas' behavior would have been instead of just
hearing them paraphrased by other authors. Anyway, the book
is worth getting just for the essays I mentioned, regardless
of the flaws.
