For fifty years, descant, the literary journal of Texas Christian University, has been publishing outstanding poetry and fiction, and, over the course of five decades, descant has become Fort Worth’s journal of poetry and fiction. Many stories and poems that first appeared in descant have later been included in collections and anthologies.

Many authors submit to descant because of our awards: The $500 Frank O’Connor Award for the best short story in an issue, the $250 Gary Wilson Award for an outstanding story in an issue, the $500 Betsy Colquitt Award for the best poem in an issue, and the $250 Baskerville Publisher’s Award for an outstanding poem in an issue.

We invite you to browse our site tolearn more about our publication, our awards, and our submission policies, and read some of the recent award-winning poems and stories that have appeared in descant
