Currie, Elliot
- Confronting Crime
- A very well-written survey of current criminology literature
that is accessible to just about anyone. Currie methodically goes
through the good points and bad points of the two major competing
themes of criminology (familial vs social origin of crime),
describing the evidence in the literature for and against each.
Some very interesting results, including arguments about why the
prison boom of the 70's and 80's didn't put a dent in the crime rate.
Currie also has a chapter or two devoted to solutions, with evidence
from the literature to back him up. Highly recommended.
