Saberhagen, Fred
- Series: Berserker
- Berserker (7 r)
- Berserker's Planet (4 r)
- The Berserker Wars (6 r)
- Berserker Blue Death (5 r)
- The Berserker Throne (4 r)
- Several more books in this series that I have not
listed. This is a series of short stories and novelettes
with the overriding theme of humankind's war with a
bunch of overgrown von Neumann machines that are seeking
to wipe out humanity (and any other living races).
Hit and miss...read any of them and then you can decide
whether you like it enough to buy more. Check the contents
first, though, because there is some overlap in stories.
I didn't buy more than this though I generally liked the
series...too much money for too little fresh material.
- Series: Book of Swords
- The First Book of Swords (7 r)
- The Second Book of Swords (7 r)
- The Third Book of Swords (7 r)
- This is the best stuff I've read by Saberhagen by far.
The story's premise is that the (Greek) gods are bored
and so to add a little spice to the affairs of men, they
create these swords with magical properties (some find
money, some bring good luck, one will go on a mission
by itself to kill for revenge). Of course, the swords
turn out to have powers over the gods themselves, and
this makes things all kinds of fun. I blazed through this
trilogy in no time. Strongly recommended.
- Series: Book of Lost Swords
- Woundhealer's Story (4 r)
- Sightblinder's Story (4 r)
- Stonecutter's Story (5 r)
- Farslayer's Story (5 r)
- While these are pretty good, they just aren't as good
as the first series. Each is a story in and of itself
about the different swords and what happens to them after
the first trilogy. I wouldn't be reluctant to go back to
buy the rest of these someday, but I have other priorities
in my reading for right now.
