Watt-Evans, Lawrence
- Series: Ethshar
- The Misenchanted Sword (8)
- With a Single Spell (7)
- The Unwilling Warlord (7)
- Blood of a Dragon (5)
- Taking Flight (4)
- The Spell of the Black Dagger (6)
- Light-hearted fantasy series set in a not-too-serious
fantasy world. Some of the tone of Pratchett and Adams
without the slapstick...plenty of humor, but mostly
situational or ironic. I liked this bunch of books very
much, but I'll admit the trend in quality is generally
downhill from the first one, imho. I've written a
full length review of With a Single Spell, if you
would like to read more about this series.
- Series: The Lords of Dus
- The Lure of the Basilisk (7 r)
- The Seven Altars of Dusarra (6 r)
- The Sword of Bheleu (6 r)
- The Book of Silence (6 r)
- Entertaining series about an oversized barbarian from
an oversized race of people who tries to find his destiny
in the fantasy world of mostly-conquered humans. This
was one of Watt-Evans first series', and it is a little
rough around the edges. If you can find it (good luck!)
then I would recommend it (especially if you like the
Ethshar books).
- Split Heirs (with Esther Friesner) (2 r)
- Light and funny fantasy along the lines of Terry Pratchett's
Discworld, though not quite as out of the mainstream of fantasy
fiction. I like Watt-Evans' other stuff, but his style just
didn't suit me here. He tried to both slapstick and fantasy
adventure at the same time, and neither worked well...it's tough
to enter a genre to be compared to Douglas Adams or Terry
Pratchett, though. I hope Watt-Evans goes back to the more
subtle/ironic/situational humor with Ethshar soon.
