  • Very funny and interesting series of baseball stories as told by a former Major League umpire. If you're a baseball fan, you should read this. There is one more book in the series (The Fall of the Roman Umpire) that I have yet to read. Sadly, in 1995, Luciano committed suicide. It was a tragedy, and I had originally thought that it stemmed from the fact that he could no longer have any formal association with the game, but I have since been informed that his depression and eventual death had more to do with a family tragedy (his mother's illness) and other personal problems.
